Derek Hallquist “achieves the images that will make my movie cinematic”, said filmmaker Eugene Jarecki; “his shooting style is breathtaking”..
Derek started his career in LA shooting reality series, but began collaborating with Eugene Jarecki shooting his films in 2008. Derek shot Freakonomics, which premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in 2010 and Reagan, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival in 2011. Derek was Director of Photography for The House I Live In, which won the 2012 Grand Jury Prize for US Documentary.

In 2011, he premiered his short Documentary The Opiate Effect at the Vermont International Film Festival as part of the US DOJ opiates outreach and education program. The documentary was nominated for an Emmy award in 2013 and is part of the Library of Congress.
He spent most of his career shooting, directing and producing the Award winning documentary, DENIAL, which premiered at the 2016 LA Film Festival.
